Offered is a dated 1953 bronze plate produced by the New York Yankees to honor Lou Gehrig, “The Iron Horse”. This relic was issued by the Yanks on 8/22/53, presumably in conjunction with their annual Old Timer’s Day festivities. Etched in the baseball-fashioned bronze plate is the Yankees logo, date, a notation of the event at Yankees Stadium, a declaration of the season being played during the 300th anniversary of New York, Gehrig's caption and the tribute, “In memory of Lou Gehrig, native New Yorker”. The cupped plate measures 9” in diameter and reveals moderate oxidation, tarnish, surface and reverse scratching along with other negligible abrasions. Despite those flaws, this memorial plate presents very well and will fit nicely into any Yankees collection.
