Description

The presented grouping of (13) original wire photos, depicting Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis amongst others, will add knockout power to any news service or boxing collection. Dating from the 1920s through the 1940s, these black and white specimens are generally in mid- to upper-mid-grade condition and feature the original news text either affixed to or printed onto the reverses. Included in multiple shots are Jack Dempsey Busy Days at the Dempsey Camp (9/5/26, 6x8, sparring), After Last Workout (6x8, 7/19/27), The Blow That Subdued Sharkey (7/22/27, 6x8), Dempsey Trains For Tunney (8/27/27, 6x8, holding training partner), But The Scene is Not Toledo (8/1/33, 6x8, with Jess Willard), Dempsey-Kearns Trial Opens (11/16/27, 6x8, in suit) and Max Baer Max Obliges a Lady (8/23/33, 8x10), How Baer Hopes to Defeat the Brown Bomber (6/27/38, 8x10, still from motion picture), You’ll Do It Again (12/5/38, 8x10, indoors with Mickey Rooney) and Road Work (12/5/38, 8x10, running with Mickey Rooney). The remaining three wire-photos include Primo Carnera Shows His Beef (1/2/30, 6x8, posing, with editors marks), Gene Tunney & Luis Firpo Shake Hands (11/28/47, 6-3/4x8-1/2) and Joe Louis The Army Hour (1940s, 8x10). It should be noted that the Louis photo is from NBC and the Baer (Obliges) is from the Examiner, while the remaining shots are from either International News or the Associated Press.
