One of the darkest events in sports history occurred during the early morning hours of June 19, 1986. Len Bias, the second pick of the 1986 NBA Draft, died of a cocaine overdose just 48 hours after being drafted by the Boston Celtics. The electric 22-year-old was destined for NBA stardom as an All-American and two-time ACC Player of the Year for the Maryland Terrapins. This 1985-86 Maryland Terrapins multi-signed yearbook is a stirring memento that contains an autograph from a legend who almost was. Inside the pages of this worn yearbook are the autographs of (13) Terrapins penned in blue ink. The cover (displaying a patented Bias dunk) contains numerous creases, while the majority of the inner pages reveal varying degrees of water damage. The final 24 pages of the 84-page program are detached from the remaining book and various notes and writing are found within. Despite those flaws, an incredibly scarce Bias autograph graces page 12 of the yearbook. The expansive 2-1/2” signature is well defined, includes a 34 inscription and appears to grade in the (“9”) range. Also present are (12) other signatures including notables Driesell, Massenburg and Gatlin (mostly “7-8”). This unique cornerstone is an impressive addition to any Maryland-themed collection.
