Presented is a scarce 1920 Knute Rockne (d.1931) TLS letter on Notre Dame stationery. Dated 1/30/20, this letter is a response to a query surrounding the status of walk-on players. The expansive 2-1/4” dark fountain pen signature features only Rockne’s surname and grades in the (“8-9”) range. The letter has moderate toning, fold stress and paper wrinkles. Encompassing the fragile ephemera is a contemporary matte leaving a 7x7 exposure of the letter. This cornerstone piece comes with an auction LOA from James Spence Authentications. My dear Frank:

I don’t believe that I can do anything for those men you mention as I have nothing to do with scholarship. Father Carey is the man who is handling it and he does not consult me on matters of that sort. In fact Plunkett was her [sic] a day or two this month and saw Fr. Carey. I could not find out what has been done about him. They resent any interference [on] my part and so I am minding my own business. It might be a good thing if you would have these men write to Fr. Carey.

I have ordered you a watch fob and as soon as they come I will forward one to you. I trust this find you prosperous and well. Come down and see us any time. With kindest regards I am Sincerely, Rockne
